Innovative social enterprise East Bali Cashews has announced as one of 10 finalists for the 2015 US Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE).
The US government has awarded the ACE each year since 1999, in order to recognise American companies that are leaders in responsible business conduct worldwide. Each of these companies is making an important contribution to the growth and sustainable development of the local economies in which they work.
An interagency committee chaired by the Department of State selected these US companies based on nominations submitted by US ambassadors from around the world.
New for 2015, ACE winners will be chosen in three distinct categories: for work on environmental sustainability; efforts on human rights and labour rights; and outstanding contribution by a small or medium enterprise. Those three winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 1.
East Bali Cashews, nominated in the category of Small or Medium Enterprise, is a cashew producer that employed 350 people in the local rural community, 85% of whom were previously unemployed women. It also improved the quality of local agricultural production and modernised its methods while expanding services to address the health and education needs of over 800 children of company employees.
